There was a lot of contention about this book. Up to this point, we were trying our hardest to separate content from form: we were all Graphic Design students judging the best book designs, so naturally we would pay more attention to binding, typography, and layout. But when Boys Do Cry came to the table, it was difficult to ignore the poignancy of the subject, and maybe most – importantly, how its simple design acted in enhancing and valuing the topic. The subtle narrative that is constructed in the chronological placing of the images, detailing the various stages of gender-affirming surgery, and the caring relationship between tattoos and diary notes, all work wonderfully in telling this story.
