This book is all about the execution. If we were to be presented with only the book’s description: portraits taken with a Nokia phone, printed on a rotary press, on newspaper paper, we would have been hesitant to take it from the shelf. Fortunately, we were wrong to assume, because we were all surprised by how well everything comes together in the end. The materiality of the paper perfectly complements the pixelated photographs and presents an interesting way of translating digital media to printed matter. Also, the fact that this publication appears in the selection along with Ukraine – Hundred Faces goes to show that cheaper methods of production don’t necessarily mean a cheap looking final product, the solution is in a design that elevates the medium.
