A very poetic polaroid book by Robby Müller, dealing with a set of pictures on flowers. There is stillness in the pages, a peaceful serenity.
The book starts with a rough, retro-feeling kraft paper with beautifully aged yellow and a big narrow serif detailing the title and author. These are repeated throughout the different sides of the fold-cover, giving a rhythmic, calming, effect.
On the inside, you find a text-section on the left, and a photographic section on the right. In the latter, polaroid photographs are suggested by printing square pictures and overlaying a polaroid margin with a transparent varnish. In the Instagram age, it’s hard to make the polaroid seem sincere, deep or even legit, but the book holds a certain conviction to it, settling the images and giving them enough space to be experienced.
Not only are there tons of fold-outs, the pages are scored with lines that guide the page-folding. This makes for a dynamic whole, in which the pages can be recombined at length. On paper, this could sound gimmicky and cheap, but the technique is presented in an elegant way.
The format is functional to the design, and the decisions are made in a delicate way, wrapping everything together. This careful treatment results in a book that makes you observe from different points of view, slowing down things around you. It invites you for a perhaps seasonal, cyclical viewing, feeling precise and calm.
