This massive book presents a comprehensive overview of Hercules Segers, one of the most inspired, experimental, and original landscapist printmakers of the Dutch Golden Age. The catalogue collects the hundreds of prints shown at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam on the occasion of an exhibition on the artist.
The most notable aspect of this impressive publication is undoubtedly represented by both the quantity and quality of the reproductions. Excellent lithography and rough paper bring the artworks back to life, giving the impression that the reader is holding the original pieces in his hands. Even though the book is perhaps not particularly inspired in the layout or overall presentation of the content, it is so dense that it manages to display an incredible number of art pieces while still remaining quite lightweight. The pages containing textual information on the artist are characterised by the use of dark green coloured typography over black paper, mimicking the feel and colours of the original etchings. On a side note, though the book is beautifully crafted and pleasant to the eyes, it must be said that this choice seriously affects legibility. However, this catalogue does not fail to deliver and will please every fan of the artist.
