We all immediately agreed that the publications The Mukade and The Mountain and Sketches from Kama City would be part of the selection. The first book is beautifully designed, the portraits are printed on soft off white paper, accompanied by short texts gracefully and simply typesetted, it gives a peek into the world of Senzu. A place where you can see a traditional Japan, still in its purest form. As the book’s final note, a meditative series of full page images unfolds, through which the ritual of dressing into a kimono is chronicled on thinner paper, which allows a smooth flip through making the reader easily see all the elegant movements of this dressing. The second book contains the background story. Its design is more “messy” and cluttered, you can immediately see it from the soft cover and rougher design. But it works, because it breaks down the seriousness and elegance of the first one, bringing it back to reality. It’s a lovely addition that contributes to the story of the book. Altogether we found it a well rounded publication, even though the first book is curved, we thought it was well worthy of its place in the selection.
