‘Caps Lock’ is definitely not a book about layout and typesetting, nor about visuals and printing technique. The reason why it is part of the student selection is due to it perfectly encapsulating everything it needs to be—relevant, affordable, and easy to produce and distribute. The book is almost like a designer’s dictionary.
It overflows with content from different fields and subtopics, bringing an abundance of examples through imagery. Everything is brought together into a simple but clear layout, which is engaging and easy to navigate and read through. Even though the design does not go beyond a rudimentary set of principles, the style is distinctively Ruben Pater’s. Even if it feels like it is all thrown together arbitrarily, there is no lack of control.
It almost looks like it is the working file where Pater collects all resources, it could be printed by anyone at home and will still carry the same value. The high quality of the book is what I personally like about it, and it is very prominent in the “design” itself. It is created to be accessible, and the visual language speaks for that.
