You see black as if it were white in this photo book; the black, the darkness from the depths of the ocean, is the solid base of the whole book. What truly caught the student jury’s attention was this extreme blackness and the immediate question of how this is technically possible.
When Red Disappears is a book presenting a selection of nature photos of benthic fauna and flora in Zeeland’s waters. The ocean bottom reveals its details with its psychedelic yet dull colours, surrounded by the darkest shades of black. The photographs show the rich colour range even in dark tones. That allows the viewers to become more sensitive to their perception of the dark and its richness in colours. At the end of the book the white text section shows a beautiful contrast with the colour of the paper and the printed black. The combination of the informative photographs, the design with the efficient black colours and the printing method enhance the powerful impression of this photo book.
