Auke: Although we are judging here for the care of the books, the exception confirms the rule, right? I believe we all think it is important that this book is included in our selection, because this is one of the few Dutch children’s books with black children in the lead. Besides that, it has a very colorful and very expressive and inviting cover.
Ruby: Indeed, we spoke about this book longer than about other children’s books because of the issue of inclusivity in this competition. I also want to mention that I think this book is just very nicely done; it is colourful and inviting with beautifully playful illustrations. It’s funny that you mention you like the cover, Auke, because it’s my least favorite aspect. The material is very smooth, and seems a bit cheap, which I think is a shame since the inside is so nice and tactile. |
Birgit: Besides the inclusivity issue, I think the book also earned its place because the book itself is quite nice. The illustrations are raw and fit the concept. The typography, with the colorful names, are a good fit for a children’s book and add playfulness to the whole thing.
Patrick: Perhaps many books don’t make the selection but are better than these. But designing a good children’s book is simply very difficult. This book has succeeded the best of all children’s books for me. Oh, and inclusivity, of course.
