A book that particularly seduced the jury showing a clever example of collaboration between design students and a paper company.
The book is the result of a project that lasted two years, which aimed to produce paper from ‘elephant grass’. After having produced this paper successfully, the final stage of the project was to develop a design for a good introduction of the paper to the market. The idea was to design a presentation model in which the characteristics of the paper produced from elephant grass were highlighted. ArtEZ graphic design students were then called to collaborate.
The students designed a unique reference book. In addition to essays on sustainability and culture, this book provides an overview of printing techniques and colours. These two elements meet in the book and mutually reinforce content and visual elements. The purpose of this design and of this collaborative work has been to inform the reader about the sustainability of new perspectives.
The Miscanthus paper is pleasant to the touch, with visible fibers, not quite white, almost yellow. It has been manufactured in different weights and colours that can be found in the book: white 100gsm and 200gsm, black 100gsm. In comparison to this paper, some print tests are also done in the book on another kind of paper.
The format of the book is also very pleasant for a specimen: fitting Arnhem’s format in reference to the format introduced by ArtEZ.
