Let me set the tone for you. Student jury #1: ‘Cowboy!’ Student jury #2: ‘Cowboy!’ Student jury #3: ‘Yihaa!’ This book about the motif of the American cowboy, presents itself as a brick of masculine representation. And it’s so much more specific than that! There are many points that draw viewers into the project, but perhaps the most important are the surprising visuals produced with imagery taken from ‘the era of Instagram’. Over its pages, the design proves to be a steadfast, unflinching collection, especially the organisation of its diverse content: ‘700 paintings, photographs and works on paper as well as texts, lyrics, and movie scripts.’ The use of typography is very particular, which sometimes left the jury scratching their heads. While there are plenty of ways to create fancy effects using multiple type styles, the goal of most of these techniques is to emulate the visual language of a particular medium. The book itself is a work of love. And a fascinating one. It’s honest, it’s funny, and it’s a beautiful artefact that you can just flat out fall in love with.
