ZONA DE PENUMBRA / IN THE GLOOM. SECUENCIAS EN LA ARQUITECTURA / SCENES SET AGAINST ARCHITECTURE

Zona de Penumbra/Scenes Set Against Architecture

Ruby: This large book seems to be both the documentation of a performance done by Galia Eibenschutz, as well as her initial research. In the groom – scenes set against Architecture are silk screened beautifully on the cover in a letter that immediately reminds me of medieval churches. I love how the thick yellowish paper and layers of stunning images and typography suit the subject matter very well. When I look at it I feel eerie, and flipping through it conjures up the same feeling I could experience while walking through a dark church. The design of the book perfectly sets the tone of the content.

Birgit: I really like how you describe this, Ruby. I can only agree with everything you say about the book. Nothing else to add!

Patrick: Good combinations of beautiful typographic pages and full bleed images. The combination of the serif letter (Sabon LT std) and the sans serif (Akzidenz Grotesk) works very well and creates balance. The book indeed gives the feeling of a medieval church. I personally find it a pity that the designer seems to have exaggerated that feeling and has chosen the large calligraphic letter. That’s too much for me. Furthermore, a very nice book.

Auke: Ruby and Patrick. I don’t want to come across as a lazy person, but you guys you took the words right out of my mouth. I rest my case.

Screenprinted and using Risograph process . The book documents a series of performances that occurred in Mexico from 2012 till 2014. These were inspired by demonic possessions that took place in France in the 16th century. Due to the features of the topic, the design of the book and the way it was printed aim to represent the dark environment where the possessions took place. The prepress and printing process were extremely careful in order to keep as many as possible black tonalities by only using a single layer of ink. The amount of ink applied on every page is so high that the weight and the texture of the paper have been changed substantially.
