Silver medal Best Book Designs from all over the World, Leipzig 2017

As explained in the artist statement of Peter Dekens, ‘I’m a documentary photographer with a keen interest in socially sensitive subjects and issues that do not generate extensive media coverage.’ This book deals with a heavyweight topic. If you browse through this document you will quickly feel what it is all about. It starts with white text on black pages and continues with full-spread black-and-white photographs that carry smaller pages within them in colour, telling the stories of surviving relatives of suicidals. The heavyweight topic is balanced out with lightweight paper and calm, clear typography. All these choices lead to the book’s being an accessible and intimate memorial, opening the discussion and raising awareness about a topic that is too often considered a taboo.
