Golden Letter, Best Book Designs from all over the World, Leipzig 2017
The only time when I look at birds is usually when they are flying in V formation, which I always thought meant ‘vorst’ meaning a cold front is coming, but this book shows that there is more to it. The book is titled Ornithology, which is a branch of zoology that concerns the study of birds, and that’s exactly what photographers Anne Geene and Arjan de Nooy are studying, but not through the known classical aesthetic. In about 300 pages you are guided through all their findings of bird occupations. Not only the motion of the birds but also the motion of the composition bring this book to live. The typographic choice hints at a both scientific and artistic approach. If you happen to be in Amsterdam walking around with this book under your arm looking for strange birds, go to this narrow street called Duifjessteeg, which derives its name from all the pigeons hanging around there, and if a pigeon happens to drop his poop from the sky, don’t use the book to protect yourself, but let it fall on your face, for closer examination.
